How age is calculated

An age calculator measures the time between a date of birth and today, and expresses it the way people actually talk about age: complete years first, then the complete months since the last birthday, then the remaining days. The method works like careful column subtraction. Start with the difference in years, months and days between the two dates. If today's day-of-month is smaller than the birth day-of-month, borrow: give up one month and add the days of the month just past. If the current month then comes before the birth month, borrow again: give up one year and add twelve months. The borrowing is why you cannot get the exact answer by dividing a day count — months have 28 to 31 days, and the calendar, not arithmetic, decides how long each borrowed month is.

The totals: months, weeks and days lived

Alongside the exact calendar age, the calculator shows lifetime totals. Total days is a straight count of every day from the birth date to today, leap days included. Total weeks is that count divided by seven, rounded down. Total months uses the average month length — 30.437 days, the year divided by twelve — because real months vary too much for a single exact divisor to exist. Take an example: someone born on June 15, 1990 turns 36 on June 15, 2026. By that birthday they have lived 13,149 days (36 ordinary years of 13,140 days, plus nine February 29ths), 1,878 weeks and about 432 months. Totals like these are the stuff of milestone celebrations — the day a baby turns 100 days old, the morning someone reaches 10,000 days (about age 27 years and 4 months), or the 20,000-day mark a little past the 54th birthday.

The next-birthday countdown

The calculator also counts down to the next birthday. If today is the birthday itself, it says so — happy birthday. Otherwise it finds the next occurrence of the birth month and day: this year if it is still ahead, next year if it has passed, and counts the days remaining, along with the age being turned. A detail for February 29 babies: in years without a February 29, the calculator treats March 1 as the point the birthday rolls over, which matches how most calendar software handles the date. Families, of course, are free to celebrate on February 28, March 1, or both — the calculator does not judge.

Everyday reasons to know an exact age

  • Forms and eligibility. School enrollment cut-offs, sports leagues, driving permits, voting, pension and Social Security start dates all turn on exact ages — sometimes "age on September 1", sometimes "age at last birthday".
  • Babies and toddlers. Development milestones are tracked in months and weeks, and parents genuinely lose count; the totals here answer "how many weeks old is she?" in one step.
  • Documents. Passport, visa and insurance forms often ask for age on a specific date; an exact years-months-days answer avoids off-by-one mistakes.
  • Fun and family history. Comparing ages — the day you become exactly as old as a parent was when you were born, or the day a grandparent reaches 30,000 days — starts with an accurate count.

One caution: legal age depends on the exact wording of the rule in question and, occasionally, on the time of day and time zone of birth. For anything official, treat this as a very good estimate and confirm against the document or authority that asked.

Frequently asked questions

How does an age calculator work out years, months and days?

It subtracts the birth date from today's date, borrowing days from the previous month and months from the previous year when needed — like column subtraction — to give complete years, complete months and the leftover days.

How many days have I been alive?

Every day since your birth, leap days included. A person born June 15, 1990 reaches 13,149 days on their 36th birthday. Enter your own date above for your total.

Why does the total months figure not match years × 12 exactly?

Because months vary from 28 to 31 days. Totals are computed from the exact day count using an average month of 30.437 days, while the years-months-days figure is the exact calendar age.

Can I work out an age on a different date, not today?

This page measures to today. The same borrowing method works for any target date — for school eligibility or retirement questions, that is the date to use in place of today.

Private by design: your date of birth stays in your browser. It is never sent to or stored on a server — the calculation happens entirely on your device.
